Tesla Cybercab Strength Comes with Weakness in China: A Tale of Two Growth Stories

Sep 9, 2026 9:22 PM · YahooFinance

The recent rollout of Tesla's Cybercab robotaxis from Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) marked a major step in the company's autonomous vehicle ambitions. Unfortunately, one of the company's other growth items saw a step back recently.

• What's the outlook for TSLA shares?

As one of the global leaders in electric vehicles, Tesla has dominated most markets it enters. One of the company's key markets for years has been China.

The Chinese electric vehicle market hasn't been so kind to Tesla in recent years, with increasing competitors and lower-cost models appealing more to consumers.

In the month of August, Tesla's retail sales in China fell 12.4% year-over-year, according to Cnevpost data cited by Electrek. This marked the weakest August for Tesla since 2022, according to the report.

Tesla ranked fifth in the country with 50,047 retail units sold in the month, significantly trailing first-place leader BYD (OTC:BYDDY), which had 233,943 retail units sold in the month.

Overall, battery-powered electric vehicles were up 0.8% year-over-year in China for the month of August, while new electric vehicles, including plug-in hybrids, were down 10.1% year-over-year.

The good news for Tesla is that its exports from its Tesla Shanghai factory were up 38.7% year-over-year. While this is a strong growth number, it trailed the overall Chinese new electric vehicle export growth of 154.7% year-over-year for the month.

Monthly and quarterly sales data for Tesla used to be one of the cornerstones of the company's stock price and momentum.

Data from China was also able to move Tesla shares in the past.

Now, things are significantly different as Tesla's new electric vehicle sales matter less to the overall growth story and to most of the long-term investors.

Instead, it's all about robotaxis and the Optimus Bot humanoid robot, items which Tesla CEO Elon Musk previously said could make up the majority of Tesla's multi-trillion-dollar valuation in the future.

Outlets won't stop reporting Tesla's Chinese sales figures, but they matter less to the stock as time goes by.

Tesla stock is up 0.17% to $368.80 on Wednesday. Tesla shares have risen 12% over the past month, but remain down 15.4% year-to-date in 2026.
