Chip stocks thwarted what started as a strong trading session on Wall Street.

The Nasdaq Composite closed 0.2% lower while the S&P 500 was roughly flat. The Dow Jones Industrial Average eked out gains, rising 0.5%, or 262 points.

All three major indexes opened the trading day higher on lower oil prices and a pause in U.S. strikes in Iran, only to backtrack as chip stocks weighed on the broader market.
