A surprise rate hike is on the table heading into the Federal Reserve’s most uncertain interest-rate decision in years, and it would likely send the stock market reeling.

Traders see a 35.8% chance that the central bank opts for a surprise rate hike, compared to odds the pause continues at 64.2%. Stocks would take a hit if Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh opts to surprise the Street.

“Traders don’t like surprises,” Steve Sosnick, the chief strategist at Interactive Brokers, tells Barron’s.
