On the surface, the Fed seems closer to hiking interest rates than lowering them. But investors didn't hear that directly from Warsh on Wednesday.

The FOMC held rates steady Wednesday, with three officials dissenting in favor of raising rates.

But Warsh provided sparse detail on what data could actually prompt the Fed's next move, despite answering a variety of questions about what could prompt a hike and whether a soft June CPI print led this week's decision to keep rates on hold.
