The Dow opened at a fresh record high for the second day in a row. Today's gains were driven by Caterpillar stock after the company crushed earnings.

The blue chip index was up 1.1%, or 583 points. Caterpillar stock gained 9%, adding over 445 points to the blue chip index.

Caterpillar is one of the largest-weighted stocks in the Dow, thanks to the index's price weighted structure. Caterpillar shares were priced at roughly $915, putting it as the second highest weighted component after Goldman Sachs, which was trading around $1,051 per share. There's a large gap between the second and third largest stocks in the index by share price with Microsoft holding the third spot at roughly $486 per share.
