Oil prices were rising after settling more than 5% lower in the previous session as investors wait to see if the U.S. and Iran can reach an agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

"There is still clearly a wide gap between the U.S. and Iran when it comes to management of the Strait of Hormuz, and, of course, the nuclear issue," analysts at ING said. "There is the very real risk that any deal unravels fairly quickly, as we saw with the memorandum of understanding."

Meanwhile, tanker movements through the critical waterway are still curtailed and the global oil market continues to tighten. In early European trading, Brent crude rose 1% to $80.15 a barrel, while WTI was up 0.3% to $76.05 a barrel.
