The S&P 500 was struggling to build on last week’s closing high.

The market benchmark was straddling the breakeven line all day. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 139 points, or 0.3%. The Nasdaq Composite was down 0.3%.

More than half of the S&P 500's stocks were down on the day. The Invesco S&P 500 Equal Weight ETF, which counts every stock in the S&P as if they were the same size, was flat.
