Tesla stock closed down 1.3% at $374.01 on Wednesday ahead of its closely watched second-quarter earnings report. That left shares down about 17% year to date and about 3% over the past three months.

The stock has struggled to generate much momentum as investors look for more progress on Tesla's AI investments, including robo-taxis.

AI is expected to be a major topic of discussion on Tesla's earnings conference call, which begins at about 5:30 p.m. Eastern time on Wednesday.
