Tesla reported weaker-than-expected second-quarter earnings on Wednesday evening. While bottom-line profits didn't meet Wall Street's projections, Tesla's report and presentation had a few encouraging tidbits.

For starters, Tesla reported that 1.5 million drivers are paying for the company's Full Self Driving, or FSD, driver assistance product. That's up from 1.3 million at the end of the first quarter and up from 950,00 a year ago.

(More than half of new car sales in North America included FSD subscriptions.)
