The latest wave of furious chip stock buying could put the semiconductor benchmark into bull market territory.

The PHLX Semiconductor Sector, or SOX, was up 2.2% to 12,667.45. That’s more than 20% higher than its recent low on July 29. If it closes above 12,536.99, it will enter a new bull market.

A bear market begins when an index falls 20% from a recent high. It must then establish a low and rally 20% from that level. That’s exactly what the SOX did during July’s steep selloff, which has given way to a huge rebound rally.
