Caterpillar and Goldman Sachs are two of the biggest stocks in the Dow. They’re also two of today’s biggest drags.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 100 points, or 0.2%, on a day when 18 of its 30 members were actually rising. The S&P 500 was down 0.6%, even though 300 of its members were on the rise. The Nasdaq Composite was down 1.2%

Chip stocks were getting hammered after a big run, fitting into a pattern of two-way volatility that’s characterized the group’s moves all year. The Dow has limited exposure to those foundations of the AI trade, but stealth-AI stocks like Caterpillar and Goldman are still wreaking havoc.
