The market's go-to fear gauge was sliding on Friday, suggesting investors were feeling a little calmer at the end of a week of significant uncertainty.

The Cboe Volatility Index, or VIX, slid to 15.7 in early trading. That implies traders expect daily swings of about 1% for the S&P 500.

The VIX has still risen by about a point and a half this week as investors fret about a move higher in bond yields. The Treasury briefly soothed the market with a plan to buy back more long-duration debt, but worries about higher borrowing costs resurfaced on Thursday.
